3 Great Ways to Improve Indoor Outdoor Flow in Your Landscape Design

These days, busy and often stressful lifestyles have led to a much greater need for relaxing at home More than ever, people want a haven where they can enjoy time with friends and family, or just put up their feet and enjoy relaxing, reading or soaking up the sun.

It’s little wonder then, that outdoor living is high on the priority list when it comes to landscape design. Whether you’re building a new home, or renovating an existing house, turning some attention to your outdoor landscape design and those ever important outdoor entertaining areas will not only benefit your lifestyle and wellbeing, it will help add value to your home.

Extend the deck (or add one)

Here in New Zealand, we’re lucky enough to enjoy the twin benefits of mild summers and daylight saving, so extending or adding a deck is a great way to increase your home’s liveable square metres and achieve more indoor/outdoor flow. If you already have a deck, think about opening up the access from your house with French doors, bi-folds or sliders that can push right back and bring the outdoors ‘inside’. Many garden and landscape designs also incorporate built in seating on the deck to create the effect of an outdoor ‘lounge.

Overhaul the Patio (or put one in!)

Nothing is nicer on a hot day than a shady patio area where you can relax with a good book and your favourite drink. With outdoor entertaining so popular, backyard patios are becoming larger and more luxurious, and if professionally planned and constructed, they are an investment that should pay off (one survey in Quebec, Canada found a landscaped patio could raise property values by 12.4%). Patios are also easily covered with louvres or shade sails creating a sheltered entertaining area so you can enjoy the outdoors in any weather.

Add a Kitchen Area or Pizza Oven

Who wouldn’t enjoy homemade wood-fired pizza by and a wine under the stars on a warm summer night! As our entertainment areas and our lifestyle aspirations become more sophisticated, many of the amenities that used to be firmly fixed indoors, such as kitchens and pizza ovens, are finding their way outdoors. Many landscape designs include a BBQ area (which may or may not be fixed), but if you’re a person who loves entertaining friends on a regular basis, the advantages of a well-equipped outdoor kitchen will pay dividends. You can easily prepare and cook food while being at hand to enjoy quality time with your family or guests, and your investment will add to your resale value.
